FFA member spotlight: Chad Lightner By Jessie Siron, reporting for the Highland County FFA
MONTEREY - Chad Lightner, a senior at Highland County High School, is the son of Raymond and Jill Lightner of Headwaters. He was asked the following questions about his Future Farmers of America experience.
How many years have you
been in FFA?
Seven years. What officer position do your
hold? Sentinel. What makes the chapter
unique?
Our county is small but very beautiful and we all have a big heart for people in our county. That big heart carries on into the FFA Chapter. Our little chapter makes a big impact on the state of Virginia we go above and beyond to make our chapter the best in Virginia.
What is your favorite FFA
activity and why?
Everything I do in FFA is my favorite. I don't really have a favorite, as being in FFA is the best because you get to help people and learn good leadership skills for life.
What have you learned through your FFA experience?
Through my FFA experience I have learned that hard work, determination and perseverance can get you any where you want to go in life, and I have learned working on my family farm what a big impact agriculture has on the world. FFA has also taught me to be a good leader and stand up for what is right, to work hard and never look back.
What CDEs do you
participate in?
Cattle working, FFA judging, tractor driving and computer information systems.
What is your Supervised
Agricultural Experience?
My SAE program is poultry and beef cattle farming. With my grandfather, uncle and father, I work as assistant manager on the (family) farm. I soon hope to take my grandfather's place when he retires so I can carry on the family farm.
What has been the highlight
of your FFA career?
The highlight of my FFA career would be going to the national convention in Indianapolis, Ind., where I could see all of the other FFA members in the U.S.
What are your plans after
high school?
After high school I plan to go to diesel college and then come back and take the place of my grandfather on the farm; soon after, I hope to be able to open my own mechanics shop on or near the farm.
What motivational quote do
you strive to live by?
Do your best in all you do and never stop to look back because you may miss the open door.
