Vendor Ed Jett enjoyed watching people Saturday at the Maple Festival in Monterey as they stopped for a close-up look at the whimsical bird houses he designs in a venture he calls Bird Brains. The retired Army veteran said he started building the bird houses five years ago as a way to keep busy. The Green Bank, W.Va. resident said he gets most of the wood donated from old barns and the dcor comes from flea markets and auctions he likes to frequent. "I'm the guy who buys the dollar box because I know I'll find a use for what's in it," he said with a chuckle.

People line up for breakfast last Saturday morning at the Bolar Ruritan Club, which hosted a menu of pancakes, sausage and maple doughnuts as part of the annual Highland Maple Festival in and around Monterey.
