Warm Springs Ranger District campground updates

WARM SPRINGS - At the Bolar Mountain Recreation Area on the north end of Lake Moomaw, opening dates and reservation availability have changed from previous years. Campground 3 will be the first to open on April 3. Campgrounds 1 and 2, the new Sugar Ridge Campground, and the beach will open May 19.

Campgrounds 2 and 3 will be operating with full services. However, Campground 1 and Sugar Ridge Campground will open with the restroom buildings closed. The sewer system is undergoing repairs, estimated to be completed by mid-June. In the meantime, Porta-Johns will be brought in and camping fees reduced. Water hydrants and electricity will still be operational.

All visitors to the Bolar Mountain Recreation Area who are not camping will be charged a day-use fee. A self-service pay station has been set up at the fee booth to accept payments when the fee booth is closed.

Reservations are currently being taken for Campgrounds 2 and 3, McClintic Point Campground and the picnic shelters. Reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov. Walk-in sites, requiring no reservation, are also available at Campgrounds 2 and 3. Reservations are not available at this time for Campgrounds 1 and Sugar Ridge, but will resume once the sewer system is operational again.

At Hidden Valley and Blowing Springs Campgrounds, camping fees per night are scheduled to increase beginning April 1. The previous fee has been in effect since 1998. Fees have been increased pursuant to the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004. With the fee increase, more funds will go back into these campgrounds for operations, maintenance and improvements.
