In Brief . . . Bath County School Board .The Bath school board met Tuesday at Millboro Elementary School and approved the following appointments: Pat Whitson, fall cheerleading sponsor; Kimberly Reese, flag corps sponsor; John Young, volunteer girls' soccer coach; Stephen Armentrout, volunteer JV baseball coach. The board accepted the retirement of Linda Criser effective June 30, approved maternity leave for Melissa Hotz and accepted the resignation of Cathy Burns, Laura Massie, Don Cooke and Melissa Hotz. The board approved the list of licensed personnel as presented to the board by staff. . On a vote of 3-1, with Warm Springs board member Jake Cleek dissenting, the board rescinded the motion of March 6 that eliminated 12-month supplements for all instructional personnel not related to guidance. . Bath County High School assistant principal April Goff reported on the blood drive held at the high school. Goff said the drive was successful and had "blown away the blood drives at Covington and Alleghany high schools." Forty-three people showed up to donate, including two people working onsite for contractors at the school renovation project. A total of 32 donors were accepted, seven of which were deferred. The total included 19 first-time donors. . Mary Kolman, director of pupil personnel services, reported on an application for the county to participate in the Virginia Response to Intervention Pilot program. Bath schools are in a good position to be one of the pilot divisions, she said. Participation will be "a good thing for Bath County schools." The emphasis of the program is on early intervention with the goal of "catching (students in need of assistance) fast." . Justin Rider reported the school system should finish the year within budget, even with a shortfall in enrollment currently at 32 students. The budget was prepared with an expected ADM of 750. The current ADM is 718. The state contributes about $5,000 per student, superintendent David Smith said. But the division received $80,000 more in forest reserve money than anticipated, making up for most of the shortage from the state. The forest reserve fund provides 25 percent of revenues from national forest property in the county to the school system. . Director of Personnel and Instruction Sue Hirsh presented the student testing calendar for board review. Hirsh pointed out most of the school days in May would be used for SOL and other testing. Almost all SOL testing will be conducted online this year, she said, which could shorten the time required to obtain results.
