MONTEREY - The Highland County Sheriff's Officereceived the following reports of destruction of property and vandalism in and around Monterey March 30. Damage in excess of $2,000 is considered a felony. Though the total amount is well in excess of that amout, the individual incidents will most likely be charged separately and will fall under the category of misdemeanors. The key differences between felony charges and misdemeanors is that felonies are typically dealt with in circuit court and carry the potential of longer imprisonment and a higher finethan misdemeanors which are handled at the district court level. Citizens reported damage to mailboxes, broken signs, an air conditioning unit, and broken electrical box connections. Sheriff Herb Lightner says an anonymous person has offered a reward. Lightner asks that anyone with information concerning these incidents to call the sheriff's officeat 468-2210.
