Bath native killed in head-on collision

COVINGTON - Jeff Keyes, a Bath County native, was killed Tuesday afternoon in a two-car accident in Covington.

According to Virginia State Police, Keyes, 45, who lived in Covington, was driving his 1986 Cadillac Cimarron south on U.S. 220 by the Honda-Nissan dealership, when he crossed the center line and hit a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer head-on.

The accident occurred at 5:04 p.m., tying up traffic for miles in either direction.

Keyes died at Alleghany Regional Hospital at 6:18 p.m.

The driver of the northbound Trailblazer, Julie Wilcher Hoffman of Covington, suffered "non-life-threatening injuries," according to Trooper J. E. Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe said Hoffman was wearing her seat belt, but there was "no indication" that Keyes was doing so.
