Car salesman asks area residents to fill car with 1,000 pounds of food
STAUNTON - Jimmy Thompson of McDonough Toyota in Staunton is beginning an ongoing food drive to help feed the needy in Bath and Highland counties. The goal is to fill one of his Toyotas with 1,000 pounds of food by the end of the summer.
In Highland County, approximately 270 residents live below the poverty level. In Bath County, the need is slightly greater with nearly 360 residents living below the poverty level.
"I like helping people," said Thompson. "I like what the Food Bank does. I think the need is out there. Sometimes, rural areas tend to be forgotten. If there's a need, there's a way."
Thompson is asking area residents to bring non-perishable food items to the car, which will be stationed at Valley Supermarket in Hot Springs on the first Tuesday of every month beginning April 1. He'll continue the food drive through September.
Most needed items are: Peanut butter, canned meats (i.e. tuna fish), canned fruits and vegetables, spaghetti sauce, pasta, cereal and 100 percent juice.
