Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton
Students at Millboro Elementary School are conducting a fund-raiser, Quarters for a Cure, collecting quarters for the Relay for Life being held on Saturday, May 24, at the school. Students are working toward a goal of $900. Anyone wishing to donate can contact any student or leave quarters in the school office. Sign-up is continuing for residents who want to participate in the annual relay in Bath County for the American Cancer Society. Olivia Haney is chairing the event this year; please call (540) 997-9135 to participate. Andrea Britt is the community representative and can be reached at andrea.britt@cancer. org or by calling (540) 774-2716. The Bath County goal for 2008 is to raise $31,750.
n Next Tuesday, April 22, marks another Earth Day celebration. It's a good time to think about planting a tree. The event was founded by Gaylord Nelson, former governor of Wisconsin, in 1970, who said, "The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard." Douthat State Park is holding its celebration for area students tomorrow, April 18, with environmental programs and projects to spruce up the park site.

Trash bags and vests are available at the chamber officein Hot Springs or can be picked up on April 19 at Millboro Mercantile Grocery, as well as at the visitor center gazebo in Warm Springs. Bags with collected litter should be left along the roadside for the state's Department of Transportation crews to pick up. For other details, please call Melinda at the chamber office,(540) 5409, or Susan Phillips at (540) 839-2743.

| Residents browse items for sale at the Millboro Elementary School Book Fair last Thursday, April 10. Students selected their purchases earlier during the school day after earning their "book bucks" in a fund-raiser last November for 10 percent of goods, such as gift wrap, they sold as part of the Scholastic book fairs program. The event was hosted by the parents' group Citizens for Education. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton) |

| Perfect attendance - Two members of the Millboro Ruritan Club have achieved an amazing record of perfect attendance, Willie Ryder, right, 35 years, and Herman Cauley, 32 years. "And I'm only 39!" quipped Cauley, his humor intact as he recovers from a fall. They are congratulated by Olivia Haney, Ruritan vice president, after receiving their pins at Monday evening's club meeting. Judy Waters was recognized for 13 years attendance; she has served as club secretary during those years. The Ruritan Club has served the community since 1951. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton) |
