Highland High School FFA member spotlight

MONTEREY - James Colaw is the son of James and Connie Colaw of Blue Grass. He is a senior at Highland High School. He has been a FFA member for seven years. He is also this year's Highland FFA Chapter Relay for Life team captain. He was asked the following questions about his FFA experience.

What makes the chapter

unique?

"Our chapter is very unique because of all the support we have from the community. It is amazing how many things we are able to participate in even though we are such a small chapter. Whether it be from buying a milkshake or fruit, our chapter would not be what is today without the support of the community."

What is your favorite FFA

activity? Why?

"My favorite FFA activity would be agriculture mechanics. In agriculture mechanics you get to work hands-on with very unique and interesting tools that I would not get the experience anywhere else."

What have you learned

through your FFA

experience?

"Through my FFA experience I have learned very good communication skills. I learned how to better speak in front of a crowd. Also through my FFA experience I have learned about how to give back to the community."

What career development events do you participate

in?

"I have many Career Development Events such as forestry judging, cattle working, livestock judging, stockmen's contest, Ag mechanics, and tractor driving."

What is your supervised

agricultural experience?

"I have three SAE's, one of which is diversified livestock production, which I started in 2001 by purchasing fivecrossbred cows. Later, I expanded by purchasing 20 Suffolk ewes and a Dorset ram lamb. My second SAE is in forestry because of my work toward the first annual Relay for Life Wildlife and Game Show. My third SAE is poultry production where I am employed at Siron Farms."

What has been the

highlight of your FFA

career?

"The highlight of my FFA career would be receiving the Star Chapter Farmer award. Every year this award is given to one select member of the FFA that shows the greatest potential in farming."

What are your plans after

high school?

"After graduating this year, I plan to attend Massanutten Vo- Tech for plumbing after completing my apprenticeship."

What is your motivational

quote?

"My favorite motivational quote would be none other than the FFA motto. Which is 'Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve.'"
