Blood drive takes volunteer effort
HOT SPRINGS - Bath County Jackson River Red Cross held its second blood drive; it was spirited but slightly off its selected goal of 50 units or pints.
Some 38 people took time from their busy schedules to wait the 30 minutes it took to register. With only three deferrals, 39 whole units were collected and these included fivedoubles or 10 pints.
Two first-timers donated their first pint of blood. It may well be psychological but people say they feel so good after they make that first donation.
It takes a lot of volunteers to make a blood drive successful; here are but a few: Cookie Fry and Betsy Byrd sign you in; Martha Berry walks you to the refreshments; Evelyn Gwin asks you what kind of cheese sandwich you'd like; Glenna Meyers and Virginia Nowlin do all the kitchen prep.
Before these people arrive, Walker May, Dr. Don Meyers, Kevin McNally and Phillip Smith set the floor up and tear it down.
The Hot Springs Presbyterian, taking its turn among all the local churches, provided the sandwiches and Mike Burton of Trimble Construction underwrote the fixings provided by Gloria and staff at McAllister's.
The Red Cross staff say there is never a shortage of workers to come to Bath County.
The next blood drive will be July 7.
