Covington man loses weight to gain money
BY JAME S JACENI CH • STAFF WRITER

FALLING SPRIGNS- Earl Broughfman of Falling Spring lost 125 pounds and won $250,000 through a Million Dollar Body online workout program.

"You just log in, work out, and win money," said Broughfman. "It's free and you can win up to $1,000 a day."

What's the catch?

Well, you have to pay $38 a quarter to be a member, but membership isn't necessary to win or to participate. Membership gets a person access to message boards, online menus, coaching and training, says Broughfman.

He started with Beachbody in 2005 and became a coach. Beachbody became Million Dollar Body. But he didn't win because he was a coach, he won because he lost weight and had a great transformation story, he said.

"You have to write a 500-word essay to qualify for the monthly drawing," he said. "At the end of the year there's a final drawing. You have to write another story, show improvements over the last year, and do a 3 ½ minute video.

"The company hired a team of independent judges, 93 people qualified for prizes. The judges picked four men and four women. They do this every year," Broughfman said.

MDB spends $70 million a year on advertising - the prize money is part of that budget. MDB sells supplements to go along with the exercise program.

Broughfman said one doesn't have to buy the supplements and he didn't experience any hard sell to participate in the contest.

It was for him a great way to lose weight, get fitand do it all on his schedule and at home. Before he started the program he weighed 320 pounds. He lost 140 pounds and 22 inches from his waist.

The 47-year old locomotive engineer works for CSX transportation and is married to Susan, who also participates in the MDB exercise program. Earl also caddies at The Homestead April through November.

Broughfman said anyone considering taking the MDB exercise program should see a doctor first.

"It depends on what kind of shape you are in to start with, there are different programs," he said.

"Eating is so crucial, too," said Broughfman.

The program offers balanced slim down plan, dividing one's dietary intake by carbohydrates, protein and fat in the proportions of 40/30/30 percent.

MDB also has an exercise program of 12 different workouts. One day a person does cardio, the next day sculpting, then legs, back jump training, and so on. "It's a big mix of different programs and it keeps you sore," said Broughfman.

Under the MDB system of diet and exercise, Broughfman lost 3-5 pounds a week.

"Everybody sees these fitpeople," said Broughfman. "Fitness is not reserved to a select few hard bodies. Everybody is entitled to be healthy and fit."
