Survivors lap begins Bath's Relay For Life
MILLBORO - In a community where the American Cancer Society has estimated that 160 individuals will be diagnosed with cancer this year, Bath County is invited to celebrate life. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a fund-raising event in which teams of participants take turns walking a track. This year's Relay For Life will take place at Millboro Elementary School on May 24.
The message of the event is that no one fights cancer alone. At noon, all survivors and their caregivers are honored with a meal. Each survivor and caregiver will receive a special gift. At 2 p.m., all cancer survivors, meaning anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, will join together on the track and walk or wheelchair the first lap, unifiedin victory and hope. This emotional lap honors the courage of all who have defeated cancer.
The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and celebration, and this event provides the opportunity for cancer survivors to pass the torch of hope on to those still battling cancer or those that might be touched by cancer in the future. Because no one fights cancer alone, friends, family members and caregivers are encouraged to cheer their loved ones on, as they take this emotional walk around the track.
If you are a cancer survivor and would like to attend the Survivor Luncheon and be a part of this event, call Olivia Haney at 540-997- 9135, or Lisa Compton at 540-839-3588.
This day also provides enter- tainment with singers, games and music, along with a Fight Back Ceremony. This ceremony will encourage each of us to pledge one action, to fight cancer. These actions can be from advocating laws in Washington, joining the local American Cancer Society Board, being a volunteer with many of ACS's programs or making a more personal pledge for a healthier life style. For more information about how you can help fight back, call Pat Foutz at 540-997-0230.
