8th annual health fair serves 225

Leslie Armstrong, RN, said the event was very successful. "The community enjoyed it; the staff enjoyed serving the community," she said. Public Health Nurse Cathy Halterman of the Highland County Health Department said gave 40 free tetanus shots during the fair - more than she expected.

The health fair offered free blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol testing, blood pressure measurement and electrocardiograms to those who attended.

HMC also offered minimal cost bone density tests for women and prostate specific antigen tests for men.

Sharon Sponaugle, director of the Highland County Department of Social Services, said the mission of the Virginia Department of Social Services is to serve the citizens' needs by providing services that nurture human dignity. Call (540) 468-2199 for more information on the wide variety of programs that social services provides to the public on a confidential basis, including Medicaid and FAMIS, family services programs, food stamps, energy assistance and child support enforcement.
The American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Bath County Home Health/Hospice, Highland Volunteer Fire Department and the Valley Program for Aging Services had displays and Dr. Clint Anderson held an open house for his recently opened HMC dental practice.

HMC executive director Dr. D. Bradley Drawbaugh thanked the volunteers and community for its support.
