In Millboro Elementary School students topped their $900 goal in the recent Quarters for a Cure fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life in Bath County, which will be held on Saturday, May 24, at the school. They collected $978.65, according to organizer Sharon Madison, a third-grade teacher. Anyone who wants to participate in the relay can contact chairman Olivia Haney by calling (540) 997-9135. The Bath County goal for 2008 is to raise $31,750.
n The annual St. Jude's Bikea thon held last Saturday, also at MES, saw participation by 18 youngsters in grades one to seven and raised $1,574, according to Sharon Madison, who coordinated this event for the 13th year. Before she took it over, the event was organized for many years by resident Faye McCoy, Madison said.
n The Millboro Volunteer Fire Association invites residents to see the now-completed building addition this Saturday, May 3, at an open house. "We will open the doors at 1 p.m. for people to come and see for themselves what has been done," said association treasurer Rhonda Grimm. She said the front of the department houses a new bay area that will hold two more vehicles, and the addition is accessible to the handicapped. There will be space for more functions, and the addition features a new kitchen and restrooms. According to Grimm, the community room will be available for the public at a minimum deposit for banquets, birthday parties, reunions, and other such events. After a ribbon-cutting, association members will serve free hot dogs, popcorn and soda while supplies last.

n The annual Girl Scout Day will be held this Saturday at Douthat State Park, beginning with registration from 10:30-11 a.m. in the Discovery Center. A small admission will be charged. After a welcome address, master storyteller Gwynn Ramsey will tell folktales from the southern Appalachians. At noon, participants can share an ask-a-ranger lunch, joining park staff. Sessions between 1-4 p.m. will include campfire cooking, a nature stroll, blacksmith demonstration with local blacksmith Glen Bryant, and a program about butterflies. n The Millboro Ruritan Club will hold a blood drive on Wednesday, May 14, from noon-6 p.m., at the club building to support resident Tammy Vess, who has overcome major health issues in the past year and still faces a bone marrow transplant. The club has a goal of collecting 30 pints. Anyone who wants to sign up to donate at a specific time that day can call Connie Duquette at (540) 997-1061 for an appointment. According to the American Red Cross, to give blood a person must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last eight weeks.
A big event will be held at the elementary school on Saturday, May 17, when students in grades six and seven present the annual Dinner Theatre, this year with their production of "The Wizard of Oz." The first show will be performed from 3-4 p.m., followed by dinner from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and the second show from 7-8 p.m. According to teacher Joy George, this year the 10 participating students are also involved with set design from start to finish. They have been working on this project since January, when they read the play. For ticket information, please call the school at (540) 997-5452.
