Pocahontas Woods offers summer classes

Shaker oval box
MARLINTON, W.Va. - Pocahontas Woods will offer two intensive week-long classes during the month of June.

The first, to be offered at Snowshoe's Shaver Center June 16-20, will be on making Shaker oval boxes. Students will learn how to make this classic hand-crafted piece. This simple but elegant design is 150 years old, but as contemporary as tomorrow. Each morning students will study with highly skilled traditional Appa- lachian woodworkers, and spend the afternoons enjoying West Virginia.

The Shaker oval box class is a project that can be completed with an item to take home at the end of the week. Students who learn quickly will be able to finish more than one box.

The second class will be held in conjunction with the Allegheny Echoes Workshops in Marlinton, June 23-27. In this class, students will build a cherry dovetailed serving tray, learning how to use a handsaw and hand planes, as well as how to lay out and cut a dovetail joint. Students will leave this class with a completed tray and the knowledge of basic woodworking skills which can translate into a wide variety of other projects.
