Shenandoah Valley celebrates bike month

STAUNTON - Did you know that May is National Bike Month? What better time to get out and enjoy riding your bike around than during the beautiful month of May? The weather is warm, the flowers are blooming - it's perfect. You can also take part in Bike to Work Week May 12-16. Think about it, you'll save on gas money, feel healthier, and maybe even get into the habit of biking to work.

If you are biking to work for the first time, give yourself plenty of time and choose the streets that are less traveled. But remember, bikes are vehicles too, with the same rules and responsibilities of other road users - so be cautious. If you are a motorist, make sure to give bicyclists at least three feet of passing room. Whether you ride a bike or drive a car, remember to share the road.

"Share the road" is a message that is being promoted by Shenandoah Valley Bicycle and Pedestrian committee. The Shenandoah Valley Bike and Ped Committee is a regional advocacy group made up of representatives of the 10 local jurisdictions in the central Shenandoah Valley whose mission is to support bicycle and pedestrian programs that make our roadways safer and friendlier for all users including advanced and recreational riders, families, school children, college students, commuters and motorists.

The group is currently working on the identification and assessment of a regional bicycle route network that will link key destinations in this region and recommend bicycle safety improvements like bike lanes, expanded paved shoulders and "Share the Road" signs.

For more information or to become involved in the bicycle and pedestrian program, contact: Bonnie Riedesel at the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission at 540-885-5174 or e-mail: bonnie@cspdc.org.
