| n School business manager Justin Rider said the revenue report was balanced, but the system needed an additional $15,000 for repairs not budgeted in the maintenance category of the 2008-09 budget. Rider asked for that amount to be transferred from transportation to maintenance. The board was not comfortable with the request. Board members recalled a similar request last May, when the school system closed out the year with a large surplus. Rider explained last year's surplus was due to an insurance enrollment year, a one-time savings. Ultimately, the board agreed to the transfer, with Waldeck dissenting.
n Board members agreed to not eliminate one bus route, with Dreama Burns abstaining.
n The board approved a day trip to Cass Railroad.
n The board denied the YMCA's request to waive the cost of the utilities at VES's modular unit for the SEEDS program.
n Dr. David Smith recommended the board authorize staff to apply for Title 1-A, Title II A and D and Title IV-A federal grants. These grants are to improve basic programs, teacher quality, enhanced technology and a safe and drug-free school and community program. The board approved. n Board member Jake Cleek questioned invoices for the high school renovations, especially the gym floor. Smith said the floor "is under the control of the contractors." Cleek was concerned about the damage done to it and was reminded that damage was done by the "flood," for which the roofingcompany will pay. "Our insurance company will collect from the roofer's insurance company," Smith said. Smith said the floor could be replaced with a synthetic material rather than wood, if the estimate for materials and installation is "roughly the same" as for the wood replacement floor. This material would allow other uses for the area.
