n Benefit bingo will be held Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m., at the Burnsville Community Center. Proceeds from the event will assist the family of Harley Woodson Sr. Besides bingo games, there will be raffles,prizes and food.

n Just in time for Mother's Day, a bake sale will be held this Saturday, May 10, beginning at 7:30 a.m., at the Millboro Mercantile market at the corner of Routes 39 West and Route 42 until all the goodies are sold. The sale is hosted by the Parish of the Pastures Relay for Life Team to support the American Cancer Society. The local relay will be held on Saturday, May 24, at the elementary school on Church Street.

n Douthat State Park will host Mother's Day activities on May 10 from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., at the Discovery Center and Amphitheater. Programs will include paper making, children's crafts (for a small fee), a wildflowerhike and campfire.For more details, e-mail Douthat@dcr.virginia.gov or call (540) 862-8100.

n A blood drive will be held next Wednesday, May 14, from noon to 6 p.m., at the Ruritan Club, to support resident Tammy Vess, who has been dealing with major health issues and will have a bone marrow transplant later this year. The club, which is sponsoring the blood drive, has a goal of collecting 30 pints. Anyone who wants to sign up to donate at a specific time that day can call Connie Duquette at (540) 997-1061 for an appointment. According to the American Red Cross, to give blood a person must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last eight weeks.

n At the elementary school, students in grades six and seven are making final preparations for their big event, the annual Dinner Theater, which will be held on Saturday, May 17. They are performing "The Wizard of Oz," the first show from 3-4 p.m., followed by dinner from 4:30-6:30 p.m., and the second show from 7-8 p.m. The students, directed by teacher Joy George, have been working on this project since January. n Another date to remember is Sunday, May 18, when the Community Fitness Center holds its first-year anniversary celebration at Calvary Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Crooked Spur road. According to Pastor John Green, the church service will include music specials from members of the center and a cookout fillfollow. Those who come to the church service are encouraged to wear fitness attire (or just to dress comfortably). The center located in the lower level of the church building will be open from noon to 2 p.m. Close to 200 area residents are using the facilities. The fitness center operates free with volunteers from Calvary Baptist Church and other area churches.

n Those who think life is for the birds can findout more at the next meeting of the Bath-Highland Bird Club on Monday, May 19, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Bolar Ruritan Hall. It's an opportunity to meet others interested in birds, hear guest speakers, and learn about conservation activities. For more information, visit www.bathhighlandbird.org.
