Ernest Wilson Brinkley
SALEM - Ernest Wilson Brinkley, 90, of Salem, formerly of Hot Springs, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the VA Veterans Care Center, in Salem.
He was born April 20, 1918 in Bath County, the son of the late James Brinkley and Susan Liptrap Brinkley.
He was married to Mabel Gladys Brinkley, whom he married Oct. 18, 1937. She preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 2006.
Mr. Brinkley was a truck driver for Home Oil Co. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II. He was a member of Hot Springs Presbyterian Church, the American Legion and the Colman Brinkley Post No. 4204. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing and caddying.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Alvin and Clinton "Boots" Brinkley.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jeanie Metzger of Monticello, Fla. and JoAnn McElwee and husband Basil of Newport News; three sons, James E. Brinkley and wife Margaret of Houston, Texas, Jerry W. Brinkley and wife Diana of Salem, and Jackson B. Brinkley and wife Brenda of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four greatgreat grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at McLaughlin Funeral Home with Elder James Brinkley officiating. Interment will be in the Warm Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Carl Chestnut, Richard Kershner, Wimpy Taylor, Richard McElwee, Rocky Phillips and Homer Simmons.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-8 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Home.
