The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently presented awards honoring Law Enforcement Officers for their Excellence in Community Service and Public Safety. The ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn - Tanglewood in Roanoke, on June 10, 2008, during which the group honored fifty-seven local and state law enforcement officers. Colonel Steven Flaherty, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, addressed the group. The Smith Mountain Lake Chapter honored these officers for their dedication to the detection and apprehension of drunk drivers in their individual counties and divisions. Sergeant James W. Bryan, III, of the Bath County Sheriff's Office was among those honored. Sgt. Bryan led the Bath County Sheriff's Office in driving under the influence (DUI) arrests in 2007, and was nominated for the award by Sheriff R. Larry Norfleet. Bryan's dedication to combating DUI offenses is much appreciated by his supervisors and peers. Each year, the officer with the most arrests and dedication to fighting DUI offenses is eligible to receive the MADD award, and be honored at a banquet.
