Juvenile apologizes for role in town vandalism
Editor's note: The following letter was written to the Monterey Town Council in care of town clerk Nancy Hooke on June 11 and shared with council members at their meeting last Thursday. The letter was authored by a youth involved in town vandalism related to the case of March 30. The case was handled in juvenile court and, therefore, The Recorder is withholding the name of the youth.
Dear Ms. Hooke,
I was involved in the vandalism that occurred on March 30, 2008 in and around Monterey. I thought at my age I knew the meaning of a dollar but I was very, very wrong.
My court date was yesterday, June 10, 2008, and I was sentenced $846 restitution, 128 hours of community service and the loss of my operator's license. I have applied for a loan to pay the restitution off in full because I don't feel it is fair for the good people I vandalized to have to wait on their money that you had to spend to repair/replace your property that was destroyed. I am working with the court at this time on doing my community service. I am now learning the meaning of a dollar. My graduation money and summer time is now being spent repairing a wrong that I caused. I see now that the actions of this stupid random act cost you time and money.
Please accept this letter as an apology on my behalf and on behalf of my parents who are suffering along with you. I am truly sorry for the stress and unnecessary cost I have placed on you.
