In Brief . . .
Highland County Planning Commission
¦ The Highland County Planning Commission and Highland County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing in joint session last Thursday to hear comments on a conditional use application from Debbi Stephenson to conduct an accounting service business in her home on Back Creek. She would do bookkeeping and prepare taxes out of her living room. She does about 40 tax returns and works with about 10 business clients. Her home is zoned A-2, agriculture. "I support it because she does my taxes," said Clay Hamilton. Planners passed the application to supervisors with a favorable recommendation. Supervisors approved the conditional use permit.

¦ Bud Wimer presented a conditional use application to operate a portable sawmill on Route 620, near Strait Creek. The 20 acres of land the sawmill would be on is zoned A-2. "It has a 20 horsepower motor on it," said Wimer. "It doesn't make a lot of noise; it's like a lawnmower." Planners visited the site Monday and saw no apparent reason not to recommend approving the application; however, the application goes to public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24 when citizens have a chance to voice their opinion. After that, planners will make a formal recommendation on which supervisors can make their decision.
