Man with Bath ties shot in robbery

ROANOKE - A man with ties to Bath County was shot and killed July 1 in an alleged botched robbery attempt at a southeast Roanoke pharmacy.

Corey Ramsey, 22, was killed as he tussled with Robert Kennedy, pharmacist and owner of Sanco Drug. Kennedy, 61, also accidentally shot himself during the struggle. He was treated at Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and released later that day. It is not yet known if Ramsey was armed, or if charges will be filed against Kennedy.

Kennedy, who has owned the drug store for 24 years, has been the target of four attempted robberies in the last decade. He has declined newspaper interviews; a bystander at the scene who is familiar with Kennedy told WDBJ-7 news that Kennedy had only recently purchased a gun.

Ramsey is the son of Sam Hiner of Mitchelltown. A visitation for Ramsey was held at McLaughlin- Young Funeral Home in Hot Springs July 4; his body was taken to West Virginia for burial.

Hiner told The Roanoke Times that his son had an ongoing battle with drugs, and had been addicted to pain killers since the age of 14. Ramsey had kicked drugs earlier this year, Hiner said, while serving three months in jail for petit larceny. He died at the scene, shortly after the shooting.
