Bath, Highland full of July 4th activity

Kids own the road during the Blue Grass Children's Parade and eat delicious cookies made by Frida Bird and ice cream before lunch on Independence Day morning.
Left: More than 15 gallons of donated homemade ice cream (including chocolate, vanilla, orange-pineapple, maple sugar, and raspberry) were doled out at the Blue Grass Book Bank. Working the assembly line Friday morning are (l-r) Carol Bandy, Nat Ames, Betty Mitchell, and Claudia Sponaugle.
Right: Courtney Wagner and son, John, ride in the next generation of the Future Farmers of America wagon. (Recorder photos by Geoff Cox)
Hopping their way to the finish line are the youngest group of sack racers who earlier, all took a tumble, but managed to get up and bounce together to the finish line. Sponsored by Bath County's Recreation Department, each child who placed received a ribbon, and first and second places won a $15 and $10 gift card respectively. Pictured are (l-r): second place, Nathan Lindsay; third place, Arial Dunnaway; first place, Trey Shaver.
From the McDowell Mennonite Church, the Higher Ground Quartet sang many audience favorites of old and new gospel songs at Williamsville's Independence Day celebration. The quartet, who has several CDs, had a missing member, Jared Heatwole, replaced by a good friend, Dan Freed, though many know him as Dr. Freed. Pictured are (l-r): Rodney Heatwole, lead; Dan Freed, baritone; Joe Shell, first tenor; and Timothy Heatwole, bass. (Recorder photos by Cynthia B. Coleman)
