Good Friends concert in McDowell July 19

McDOWELL - Local violinist Amanda Blagg and The Sometime, Old-Time Band will present a evening of string music at the McDowell Presbyterian Church on July 19 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will end with a reception hosted by the Highland County Arts Council.

The evening will be a fascinating mix, from revered classical composers like Bach and Vivaldi, to pieces composed by members of the band. Along the way audiences will enjoy classic fiddle tunes like Cripple Creek, Cold Frosty Morning, Golden Slippers and an assortment of Irish songs.

Guitarist John Hull organized The Sometime, Old-Time Band with musician friends in Harrisonburg. Joining him are Wanda Harder and Tim Grove on mandolin and Joseph and Candace Showalter on fiddle. Hull has performed many times in Highland County with Two Gun Terry. He is particularly looking forward to the excellent acoustics in the church and the friendly hospitality of the Highland audience, he says.

Blagg has been studying violin since she was in fourth grade. At this time she travels to Eastern Mennonite University to study with Sharon Miller. She plays violin in the band at Highland. Amanda became interested in fiddling about three years ago and has added that study to her classical work

Join these talented musicians for an evening of music. There is no charge for the concert.
