Bath art show to open Sunday
See A Show!

ASHWOOD - It's time to plan, again. The 44th annual Bath County Art Show opens Sunday, July 13 and runs for a full week, closing at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 20.

More than 675 entries were received by volunteers from the Bath County Arts Association last Saturday and Sunday. The oils and watercolors, the acrylics, charcoals, and graphics, the sculpture, photography and mixed media, are the work of 250 artists from across Virginia and West Virginia, and even beyond.

Saddled with the task of choosing the best and the brightest is judge Jacquelyn D. Serwer, chief curator of the National Museum of African American History and culture, an arm of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

The doors are open daily from 1:30 until 5 p.m., and all works are for sale. You will have to live without your wonderful new acquisition for a few days, however; all works must be displayed until 5 p.m., Sunday, July 20.

Cathy Singleton, who co-chairs the BCAA board of directors with Lou Ann Vincent, is excited about the show, as always. It is a testament to the ever-changing and always intriguing nature of art that, after decades at the helm of the Bath Art Show, Singleton can recapture that enthusiasm year after year.

Four of the 250 artists bringing work to the 44th annual Bath County Art Show took a moment to admire "Winter Frost," an oil by Karen Carter. Perhaps one thing that most excites her is the opportunity the show presents for further promotion of the arts in Bath County.

"Last year, the arts association put more than $50,000 back into Bath County," she says, noting all proceeds from the show go back to the schools and community.

Some of the projects supported and/or underwritten by the BCAA include up to three $1,500 scholarships awarded to graduating seniors at Bath County High School, and sponsorship of the Missoula Children's Theater production here every summer.

In the schools, there's the Children's Art Network traveling studio school from Staunton each year, and the Student Art Network, in which BCAA provides money for framing student art, and then displaying it in public venues throughout the community.

And of course, there's music. Last year, the BCAA purchased a tenor saxophone for the high school, and paid for five band camp scholarships for BCHS students.

The British Invasion fundraiser, the Virginia Blues & Jazz Festival, the Bluegrass Jamboree - all are funded at least in part by the association.

Helping out Singleton and Vincent are Jacob Yarrow, vice chairman, and Janice McWilliams, treasurer. Other directors include Kay Alexander, Patty Biedermann, Laura Dascher, Karen Diamond, Hugh Gwin, Perlista Henry, Sally Johnson, Terry Kershner, Todd Lacks, Allyson LeMay, Jane Mellen, Mary Mustoe, Margo Oxendine and Marjorie Platou.

If you're making plans to visit the art show, remember this: There are almost 700 things to see; you may need two days, or even three.
