Demolition of dilapidated band room at Old Millboro School

MILLBORO - Mark Nelson, director of parks and recreation, discovered potential safety hazards for the public in the continuing deterioration of the band room at Old Millboro School. The roof was falling in and it was extremely unsafe. The county staff asked the board of supervisors to approve demolition and asbestos abatement so that the danger to the community would be eliminated. The board agreed on June 10, directing the county administrator and the director of parks and recreation to "obtain the best price and tear down and dispose of the old band room." With those instructions, the county initiated an emergency procurement for services and equipment.

On Friday, July 11, the low bidder, Waco, Inc., will be removing the asbestos from the interior of the old band room at Old Millboro School. The asbestos will be properly disposed to meet all federal and state standards as part of the contract.

On Monday, July 14, parks and recreation staff will be demolishing the remains of the old band room, following the asbestos abatement. Nelson has secured an excavator through a competitive search for rental equipment and will be working with Grey Lee Hicks of the county parks and recreation staff, who will operate the excavator, to accomplish the demolition. Roll-off waste boxes will be on-site to take the non-hazardous materials to the county's transfer station. Completion of the project is expected by Friday, July 18.

Jon R. Trees, chairman of the board of supervisors, has worked with the county staff on project planning and implementation. He concluded, "We can see in this project that the county staff has performed many duties beyond the normal work routine to finish this safety project at a minimum expense to the taxpayers."
