George E. McWhorter Jr. was sworn in as a member of the Monterey Town Council Friday of last week. McWhorter's appointment to the council was announced at the July 5 meeting of that body and followed the resignation of Monterey mayor John W. Appleford, who has established his residence near Waynesboro. When Appleford resigned as mayor, vice-mayor Bickley Fox assumed the position of acting mayor but indicated he was not interested in maintaining that position. Council unofficially agreed at the last meeting to elect McWhorter as vice-mayor at the August meeting, at which time he will assume the duties of mayor.
The 19th Bath County annual art show began Sunday, July 17 and will continue through Sunday, July 23 at the Bath County High School gymnasium. From the media included in this year's show (oil, watercolor, graphics, mixed media, and photography), a mixed media entry "Haircutters" by Anne Belle of Roanoke was judged "best in show" by jurist Richard Crozier. The work was chosen from 220 entries by 87 artists.

The purchasers
of Bolar Springs have changed the name to "Abulent Springs, Inc." The company now specializes in the sale of bottled water. We predict this spring will become one of the county's more popular health resorts.
