Old classroom demolished

The old Millboro school band room was demolished Monday with Bath County Parks and Recreation staff Grey Lee Hicks manning the CAT. The old classroom facing Crooked Spur road had deteriorated to the point of the roof caving in and was considered a health and safety hazard. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
MILLBORO - Part of the old Millboro school came down in chunks on Monday - the old band classroom on the side facing Crooked Spur road. The demolition was accomplished by the Bath County Department of Parks and Recreation after asbestos- containing floor tiles were removed by Waco Inc. of Mt. Crawford, a firm that specializes in asbestos removal.

County supervisors sought bids for the asbestos removal on an emergency basis last month after the dilapidated building was deemed a health and safety hazard to the public.

Waco Inc. was the low bidder at $1,950. Other bidders were: Asbestco Inc., $2,495; and E. Luke Greene Co. Inc., $2,956. Bids were reviewed on July 1.

Supervisors had authorized county administrator Bonnie Johnson and Park sand Recreation director Mark Nelson on June 10 to proceed in taking down and disposing of the former band room.

Johnson said on Monday, "We followed the emergency procurement laws of the state, worked with DEQ and the Department of Labor and Industry to assure we proceeded correctly, solicited bids from 10 groups that work in the field, and held a prebid walkthrough. Bids were received publicly and opened and read."

She noted her office obtained the names to solicit competitively from state lists and local contractors. The three bids listed above were received.

Nelson said on Monday he expected to the work to be completed in one or two days.
