FSA sign up for farms continues

LEXINGTON - Sign-up for the 2008 Direct and Counter- Cyclical Program is under way at the Rockbridge/Alleghany/Bath County Farm Service Agency Office. Any farm with a wheat, feed grain, or soybean base is eligible to be enrolled in the 2008 program. Signup began June 25 and continues until Sept. 30.

New for 2008 is the provision that farms that have 10 base acres or less shall not receive direct or counter-cyclical payments unless that farm is wholly owned by socially disadvantaged or limited resource farmers or ranchers.

Producers may elect to receive an advance payment of 22 percent on direct payments through Sept. 30. If an advance payment is not requested, producers will receive their direct payment after Oct. 1.

Producers who produce crop(s) on base acres are entitled to share in the DCP payment. Landowners who do not have an interest in the crop(s) are not eligible to receive a DCP payment.

Interested producers should contact the FSA office at (540) 463-7124, option 2, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to schedule an appointment.
