Blue Grass man awaits trial for failure to register as sex offender

MONTEREY — Ray Martinez III, 46, Blue Grass, asked Judge Humes Franklin Jr. for an attorney last Friday in Highland County Circuit Court, and attorney Betty Cauley of Warm Springs was assigned.

Martinez was originally arrested with failing to register as a sex offender on June 22, 2006, for an offense occurring April 15. He was tried and sentenced on Dec. 19, 2006 and was on probation from that conviction.

On Nov. 9, 2007, he violated that probation by unlawfully possessing cocaine when he was arrested by the Staunton Police Department for driving a car with expired tags. He also had a 16-year-old girl in his car in violation of his probation.

Martinez was convicted in Augusta County March 19, 1990 of aggravated sexual assault and sentenced June 14, 1990, to 15 years in jail, with 14 years, six months suspended.

His probation violation case was continued until a court date could be set. Martinez is incarcerated at Middle River Regional Jail where he has been since his arrest Nov. 9.
