The Blue Grass Ruritan Club drew the winning raffle tickets for the club's free fuel raffle on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Highland County fairgrounds. Jared Mallow of Pendleton County, W.Va. claimed the grand prize, which was $1,200 in fuel or $900 cash. Mallow opted for the immediate cash payment. Stu Simmons of Blue Grass won the second prize of $360 in fuel. He chose Rexrode's Country Store at Forks of Water as the gas station to claim his winnings. Pete Kay of Bath County received the third place prize of $120 in fuel or $100 cash; she chose the cash payment.

Rexrode's Country Store, Brightway/Gutshalls Exxon, and McDowell Gas N Go were the gas station sponsors. The club hopes to expand on the success of this year's raffle and offer bigger and better prizes next year.

Profits from the raffle will support the Ruritans' community service projects and charitable activities in the county. Among the projects Blue Grass Ruritans recently sponsored was the Highland County Fair 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale, contributing more than $1,400 to youth livestock exhibitors. The club also supports the county's volunteer rescue squads and fire departments, the Highland Senior Center, youth employment programs, academic scholarships, veterans' causes, and other worthwhile civic activities.
