Family proud of son's accomplishments at fair Editor, The Recorder,
In response to Ann Ketcham's letter in The Recorder last week: When I got the paper last week, and started to read Ann Ketcham's article about the buzzard that beat the cougar for "best in show" at the Highland County Fair, my blood began to boil. I think there was steam coming out both of my ears, the reason being that my son Devin was the first-place winner of "best in show" with his beautiful world class wild turkey.
Devin has been a turkey hunter ever since he was old enough to hold a gun in his hands. Devin had a great teacher — his father, Scott. Most everybody knows Devin and Scott around Bath and Highland counties, and knows their love for the big gobbler. I couldn't understand her rude comments about Devin's wild turkey. It seemed to me that she was taking it kind of hard. Well, I just want Ann and her family to know that Devin's wild turkey won fair and square, after all, it is a small town county fair, not a big game show. But even if the cougar had won, Devin would have been fine with that. Devin has spent countless hours in the mountains of Bath and Highland counties.
As a kid, Devin killed his first will turkey at the age of six and as a young man, at 17 years old, killed a world class gobbler which took first place and "best in show" at the 2008 Highland County Fair.
We are so proud of Devin and his beautiful wild turkey, which hangs by the fireplace with a blue and purple ribbon.
Ann, we are so sorry that the game show didn't go your family's way this year. But like you said, get your big old buzzard and get it stuffed and come on back next year.
Best of luck, Ann Ketcham and family. See you at the 2009 Highland County Fair game show.
Dawn Duncan Burnsville, Va.
