Edith 'Edie' Colaw Simmons

HIGHTOWN — Edith "Edie" Colaw Simmons, 73, of Hightown, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at her home.

She was born April 9, 1935 at Blue Grass, a daughter of the late Charles King and Ophelia Mahone Colaw.

On June 10, 1955, she married Harry "Saul" Simmons, who preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 1999.

Mrs. Simmons was a member of Hightown United Methodist Church and a former member of the Women of the Church Group and the Extension Homemakers. She was a mail carrier and loved to farm and to sew.

She is survived by a son and daughter-inlaw, Paul and Vicky Simmons of Hightown; a granddaughter and her husband, Jessica and Jeff Liller of Peru, W.Va.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Margaret Smith of Monterey and Millie and Lewis Shumate of McDowell; two special nephews, Steve and Jeff Shumate, both of McDowell and a niece, Donna Childress of North Carolina.

A funeral service was conducted 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept.16, at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Andre Crummett and the Rev. Richard Gibson officiating. Burial was in Blue Grass Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jerry Smith, George Smith Jr., Perry Warner, Donald Hedrick, Rob Warner, Denny Duncan, Kevin Simmons and Doug Hull.

Honorary pallbearers were her caregivers and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Highland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, Va. or American Cancer Society, c/o Norma Reynolds, 3052 Mill Gap Rd, Monterey, Va. 24465.
