John Alfred Quist

LEXINGTON — John Alfred Quist, 87, of Lexington, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008.

He was born April 12, 1921, in New York, N.Y., a son of the late Carl and Dorothy Quist.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eva Rexrode Quist.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and was on the U.S.S. Lexington when it was sunk in the Coral Sea.

He worked in telecommunications for many years in both Staunton and Lexington.

He was a member for more than 50 years of Mountain City Lodge No. 67 in Lexington; a member of the Lexington Planning Commission and the Regional Planning Commission in the 1960s; a pastpresident of the Lexington Kiwanis Club; a member of the Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners; a member of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary; and an avid chess and bridge player.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Berry of Rockbridge Baths; a son, James C. Quist of Lexington; a brother, Robert Foisey; a sister, Eloise Veil; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Lexington by Father Thomas McHenry on Oct. 2. A committal service was held Friday, Oct. 3, at Monterey Cemetery.
