Basketball season opens Wednesday

with Rams away The Monterey High School basketball team will open the 1958-59 season next Wednesday against Circleville, W.Va. in an away-from-home contest expected to indicate the strength of the local squad which has only one returning regular. The team has been showing up well in practice under its new coach, James Moon, and has plenty of height, plus the point-making ability of R.K. Gutshall , who had a 19.9 average last year. Gutshall was also the big gun in tournament play which took the Rams to the District N championship. They were defeated in regional play by the Triplett High. Besides Gutshall, coach Moon is depending on forward David Wade, center Ernie Hiner and guards Bobbie McCray and Dale Beverage for heavy service this year. Most of the reserves are ninth and tenth graders. The Circleville game will get underway at 8 p.m. and should provide a good tuneup for the home opener in Dec. 9 with Craigsville, always tough in league competition. The Monterey Lassies will open their season that night, playing the preliminary. The 1958-59 schedule, below, has been changed since schedule cards were printed and card holders should note the changes which have Franklin here on Dec. 17 and the Rams there on Jan. 20. The second Circleville game, originally scheduled for Feb. 17, has been moved to Jan. 23. All league games will begin at 7 p.m. with others at 8 p.m.
