Insurance won't pay for bear damage
HOT SPRINGS — Apparently, the insurance policy for the Bath County Airport does not have a bear provision.
Airport manager Becky Skidmore said last week she has been told insurance will not pay for damage done by a bear to the strobe light at the end of the runway and to a runway light that was pulled from the ground and dragged up a hill.
The strobe light was discovered damaged the morning of Oct. 29, and the runway light earlier that week. Skidmore said the airport has gotten a grant from the state to pay for 80 percent of the repairs, but the airport will have to cover the remaining 20 percent from its budget. The damage was estimated at about $2,000, Skidmore said.
"It's bad this happened at the start of winter when we really need the lights. We won't be able to fix them until the (weather) conditions improve a little, but they should be fixed soon," Skidmore said.
Fortunately, this is a more quiet time for the airport, Skidmore said. The runway was closed Wednesday, Nov. 19 due to snow, but reopened the following day.
