Pioneer District doubles champs Amelia Walters (left) and Jessica Gutting won an exciting come-from-behind match over George Wythe to advance to the Region C finals, and finished the year as Region C runners-up last Thursday. RADFORD — Trailing 4-0 in the third set, the Bath County tandem of Jessica Gutting/ Amelia Walters staged a desperate comeback to defeat George Wythe doubles team Meredith McDaniel/Kelsey Morrison, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the Region C semifinals last Wednesday, May 27.

The victory sent the girls into the regional finals against a powerhouse Bland County team. It marked the first regional win of any kind for girls' tennis in recent memory.

"Simply stated, it was the best match I have ever been associated with," said Bath coach Terry Bradley. "The girls should be proud of their determination not to lose."

Thursday, the Charger duo fell to the undefeated Bland County tandem of Grace Sarver and Kirby Mustard 6-2, 6-0 in the finals to end the year as Region C runners-up.

"It was a great season for all of our girls," said Bradley upon concluding the season, his last at the helm (see related story). "I think they now know what it takes to be competitive at this level, so it's up to them."
