MONTEREY — Last Thursday Monterey town council held a public hearing on a proposal to eliminate the town's vehicle sticker but retain the automobile and truck license fee. After taking comments, council voted to table the measure until two councilmen not present at the meeting had a chance to vote. More ... • At town council's meeting last Thursday, Oct. 1, Mayor Janice Warner said the wastewater treatment plant upgrade was ahead of schedule. MONTEREY — Last month, Monterey Town Council proposed several changes to the town charter, including moving the date of the town election from May to November and reducing the number of councilmen to four. NORFOLK — As the result of a Sept. 2 inspection, Gathright Dam, completed in 1979 to form Lake Moomaw, has been given a potentially unsafe" rating by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. More ... Eric and Margo Clegg have been landscaping around the "Welcome to Bath County" sign on Route 39 east since spring 2008. They decided to adopt the sign after the Bath County Chamber of Commerce asked people or groups to help when the signs were originally put up. The Cleggs dug out the area around the sign and put in nine inches of topsoil. They originally tried to have something blooming all year, but had to modify that to plants deer would not eat. They credited Roger Thompson with donating mulch for the project, Mike McCray with hauling the topsoil and Trish Darby and Ray Schonlieber for helping with labor. They said they spend time on the sign each month. When they first started, there was a lot of trash thrown around the sign, but said now that the area is maintained, they find very little trash. The Mountain Grove United Methodist Church ladies group has volunteered to landscape the sign on Route 39 west, but volunteers are still needed for the signs on U.S. 220 north and south. Phyllis Whetzel made a Christmas quilt to be raffled off for the benefit of the Highland Senior Center. The quilt will be on display over Hands and Harvest weekend in The Highland Center auditorium during the sweater sale where seniors will be selling tickets. After this weekend, the quilt will be on display at Highland County Crafts and tickets will be available for sale at Highland County Crafts, Evelyn's Pantry, The Attic and the senior center. The drawing will be held Sunday afternoon during Wintertide weekend. The team placed first place in show, first place in small teams, first place in line, first place in exhibition and second in a capella team. Sundance Express also won overall exhibition team. Dorothy Stephenson (middle row on left), Emily Kimble (middle row on right), and Meyer Rexrode (front) took home first place in contemporary solos in their age divisions.
