On Campus Two former Bath County High School football standouts are playing college football this fall at two Virginia colleges. In Lynchburg, Tommy Shaver and the Liberty University football team rolled past Gardner-Webb 51-28 in Big South action last week. Shaver, a redshirt sophomore tight end, had his first career touchdown catch of 5 yards in the second quarter of the contest. I was very excited," Shaver said this week of his scoring reception. Shaver has been playing all of the special teams and getting about 15 plays per contest on offense this year. His season statistics include three catches for 35 yards, an average of 11.7 yards per catch, one touchdown, three total tackles, two solo and one assist, and a kickoff return for 17 yards. "I've been really excited about the opportunity to play this year," Shaver said. With a win this week at Stony Brook the Flames can capture a share of the conference title for the fourth straight year. "We are going to have to get a win to have a chance for the playoffs," Shaver said, adding that the Big South does not have an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Shaver is also doing well in academics, majoring in sport management with aspirations of being an athletic director in the future. LU, 8-2 overall, travels to Stony Brook (N.Y.) for the final regular season game of the season on Saturday. The FCS playoff field will be announced on Sunday. In Newport News, Jim King and the Christopher Newport University football team closed out its season with a 10-9 road loss to Methodist last Saturday. King is a freshman wide receiver and kicker for the Captains and has been seeing mostly junior varsity action this fall. CNU finished its season 5-5 overall. |
