74 inches of snow and counting
      MONTEREY — Think this winter has been the worst ever? Well, you might be right. While snowfall records have been broken all over the East Coast this winter, it took until this week for Highland to cross the mark. According to John Sweet of Mustoe, who operates an NOAA weather station in Mustoe for Highland, the seasonal snowfall record was finally broken here on Monday.

HMC director leaves town
      MONTEREY — D. Bradley Drawbaugh, the Highland Medical Center executive director who was recently suspended following fraud charges, has left town, presumably for good. Virginia State Police had arrested Drawbaugh on one felony and one misdemeanor charge Dec. 22, 2009, for allegedly working at the center and earning his salary there under false pretenses.

Highland native seeks office in Williamsburg
      WILLIAMSBURG — Folks back home won’t be surprised that Scott Foster is aiming high. They might be surprised he’s doing it so soon, though. Foster, a 2006 Highland High School grad, is running for Williamsburg City Council. He declared his candidacy three months before he’s set to graduate from the College of William and Mary.

      MONTEREY — Pocahontas County, W.Va. commissioner David Fleming told the Highland County Board of Supervisors he was sorry about the way the Pocahontas County Commission handled the recent border dispute with Highland New Wind Development.

     • Highland administrator Roberta Lambert said the Weldon-Cooper Center released population projections for Highland County. She said the 2000 census showed the county had 2,536 citizens. The final estimate for 2008, however, was 2,272.

      WILLIAMSBURG — Scott Foster has only lived in the city for three and a half years, but he started considering a run for Williamsburg’s city council months ago. “The greatest asset of Williamsburg is its high quality of life. That is why so many people come here,” he said.

Drug task force makes huge sweep
      LOW MOOR – A recent operation by the Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force resulted in 55 indictments on 179 felony drug charges, Alleghany County sheriff Kevin Hall announced last week. Of those, 52 have been arrested. They include: • Rashawn A. Jeter, 31, of Covington on two counts of distribution of cocaine.

National forest trails to benefit from federal stimulus money
      ROANOKE — The U.S. Forest Service and the Student Conservation Association will partner to improve numerous trails on the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, using money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. SCA is recruiting to fill nine project leader positions and 37 trail team member positions for seven SCA trail teams.

Macey Grace Paxton
      LEXINGTON — Eric and Suzanna Paxton of Mountain Valley Road, Millboro, announce the birth of a daughter, Macey Grace, born Jan. 15, 2010 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington. She weighed six pounds and 15.6 ounces and was 21 inches long. Maternal grandparents are C.W. and Dreama Burns, and her uncle is William Lee Burns, all of Millboro.
