When history comes to life: My experience with the 611

Hot Springs native and current James Madison University junior Colby Lowry, right, recently undertook a historic train ride on the Norfolk and Western Railroad’s 611 train, “The Spirit of Roanoke.” The train is the only surviving example of Norfolk and Western’s class J 4-8-4 type “Northern” streamlined steam locomotives. He undertook the roundtrip ride from Victoria Station in Goshen to Staunton on August 29. He embarked on the ride with his roommate, Caleb Roden. (Photo courtesy Colby Lowry)
